Sadness Within 3

The rain was pounding onto the ground. The black smoke was rising to the grey clouds. At the Candy Castle, the candy people were peeking out through the doors and windows, looking at the smoke. The Princess and Finn were out in the rain, both terrified of what just happened.

"Finn, you don't think that was Jake…right?"

Finn was motionless.

"Finn?"

So slowly, Finn looked back at the Princess.

"I don't know."

"But what could that have possibly been?"

Finn looked at back at the smoke.

"But I don't think I should wait any longer. I'm going to find out what it was."

"What?"

"Well, what if something terrible happened to Jake, and I'm not out there to help? For all I know, he might be seriously hurt!"

"But-"

"You take care of your people, and I'll be right back!"

"FINN, WAIT!!!"

Before Finn could even move, Princess Bubblegum grabbed his arm.

"You don't know what you're dealing with. What if those things hurt you too?"

"Don't worry; I have my sword with me. Besides, I've defeated more terrible monsters than those puny ones. I just need to find Jake."

"Finn..."

"I'll come back as quick as I can!"

She finally let go of his arm.

"Be careful out there. Come straight back here when you find him."

"I will, Princess."

Finn took off running down the stairs into the streets. Princess Bubblegum turned to the doors and went inside. The candy people were gathering around the Princess.

"Fear not, sweet citizens. Everything's alright. Go ahead and make yourselves comfortable. "

The candy people, feeling relieved to hear the good news, went and sat all around the room. Walking towards the Princess, Peppermint Butler came with a small towel.

"Here, Princess. You're soaking wet from standing out in the rain. Please dry yourself before you get sick."

"Oh, why thank you, Peppermint Butler."

The Princess took the towel and wrapped it around her long bubblegum hair.

"Peppermint Butler, while I have you here, do you mind helping prepare some food for the candy people here?"

"No problem, my lady!"

The little butler rushed out the room. Princess Bubblegum looked out the windows, the rain still showering down.

"Hmmm...I'm still worried for Finn. Maybe I should help him out."

The Princess rushed into another room, picked up a phone, and started dialing.

"I hope Lady is still there."



Running in the fields, Finn ran as fast as his legs could go. The little water droplets landed straight on his face, making it hard for him to see where he was going. He didn't stop running until he saw the black smoke coming closer to him. He took a few deep breaths, and started running again. He then stopped completely when he came across a long row of trees. The smoke started diminishing behind the tall trees.

"Jake, I hope you're here."

He took out his sword and walked through the trees. As he walked, he kept himself alert of any danger around him. He then caught a strong scent of smoke and fire. The trees started to get darker and darker with black burns on the tree bark. He then came upon a small open area. The grass and trees had become black. Some of the trees were caught on fire; others had lost its branches. Finn looked around and suddenly shrieked when he realized that on a big tree, there were 20 of the monsters, dead.

"What the heck happened here?!"

Just then, Finn heard a soft scuffling sound. On the other end of the big tree, where all the other monsters were, one of them was still alive. Half its black fur was burned off of it. It seemed to be chewing on something under the tree.

"So you still live, huh?"

He grasped his sword in tightly in his hand. As he took his first step, the burned grass made a loud crunch. The beast turned his head towards Finn. It started growling at him and grinding its sharp teeth. Right beside it, there was something lying on the grass. Something round and yellow....

"JAKE!"

The beast growled louder, getting ready to attack.

"Leave him alone!!"

Finn started running at the beast, swinging his sword. He made his hit on the beast's leg. It growled and tried to hit Finn with its sharp-clawed paw. Finn swung his sword at its paw, and hit the paw so hard; it yelped loudly and ran off, disappearing into the trees. Finn immediately put away his sword and ran to Jake.

"Jake! Are you okay bro? Can you hear me? It's me, Finn!!"

Jake didn't stir. He was cold. His skin was pale yellow and half his body was covered with burns.

"Jake? Answer me!"

Finn was shaking Jake, trying to get him up. He still didn't move.

"Get up!"

He started shaking him harder.

"GET-"

He stopped. He became quiet. Everything felt so still. It felt like time just stopped. He could hear the sound of the fire crackling on the trees and the sound of the rain falling to the ground. He could then feel his eyes sting with tears. He quickly wiped it away and looked at Jake.

"Don't worry, Jake. I'll get you out of here."

He gently picked Jake up and started running into the trees again. He ran as fast as he could through the trees. When he came out of the trees, the sky looked grey-white. The cold raindrops fell onto Finn's face as he ran. Just then, he heard a sound. He looked up at the sky and saw Lady Rainicorn flying in the clouds.

"Lady? HEY LADY!! Over here!!"

Lady looked back and flew down at Finn.

(Finn, I was just on my way to-)

Lady saw Jake on Finn's arms.

"제이크! 어떻게 된거야?"
(Jake!! What happened?)

"Lady, he'll be alright. Can you help me bring both of us back to the Candy Kingdom as quick as possible?"

Lady nodded and Finn got on her back. She then flew up to the clouds. Finn grabbed onto Lady with one arm and Jake on another. The air was cold and damp, he shivered with cold chills. From afar, he could glimpse the sight of the Candy Kingdom coming closer.

"Almost there."

Lady flew over the little houses in the Kingdom, and then landed in front of the castle. Finn got off Lady's back.

"Thanks, Lady."

Finn rushed over to the doors of the castle and slammed them open.

"PRINCESS!!! WHERE ARE YOU? THIS IS AN EMERGENCY!!!"

Inside, the candy people gasped at the sight of Finn with Jake in his arms. Princess Bubblegum then appeared from another room.

"Finn, your bac-OH MY GOODNESS! WHAT'S HAPPENED TO JAKE?"

"Princess, he's in terrible shape. He won't wake up!"

"Oh, he needs medical care! We need to go to Dr. Ice Cream! Hurry, follow me!"

Finn, alongside with Lady, followed Princess Bubblegum through the castle. They went through the hallways of the castle into the emergency waiting room.

"Dr. Ice Cream! We need your assistance!"

The doors in the room swung open, and Dr. Ice Cream and Nurse Poundcake came into the room in a rush.

"Princess, did you call?"

"Dr. Ice Cream, it's an emergency. It's Finn friend, Jake. He's in need of medical care."

Dr. Ice Cream went to Finn and examined Jake.

"Oh dear. He doesn't look so good. Quick! We need to get him to the surgical room. Nurse Poundcake, get the gurney!"

Nurse Poundcake went off to the room and came back with a white bed. She took the gurney in front of Finn.

"Finn, put Jake on the gurney, and we'll take him to the surgical room."

Finn looked down at Jake. His body was trembling. He quickly gave one last squeeze and carefully placed Jake onto the gurney. Dr. Ice Cream and Nurse Poundcake pushed the gurney away from Finn.

"Don't worry, Finn. He'll be alright."

Finn didn't say a word, but just nodded. Princess Bubblegum walked to Dr. Ice Cream.

"I'm putting my trust into you, Doctor. Please do whatever it takes to revive Jake."

"Of course, Princess."

The Doctor and the Nurse then pushed the gurney away and disappeared to the ER.



The rain had finally calmed down after the sun had set. Outside, the clouds had become light and grey in the cold weather. Inside the castle, the candy people had left to their houses. Finn, Lady Rainicorn, and Princess Bubblegum were the only ones in the room. They were all lying on the floor, against the wall. Finn and Lady were each wrapped with a small towel.

"How long has it been?"

"....4 hours..."

"왜 이렇게 오래 걸리는 거지?"
(Why is it taking so long?)

Finn felt uneasy. He didn't like the feeling of waiting too long. He looked at Princess Bubblegum and Lady. The Princess looked tired and nervous. Lady seemed more nervous.

"Lady?"

Princess Bubblegum looked at Lady. She put her arm around her back.

"Jake will be alright. You'll see."

"Yeah, Lady. Jake's a tough dog. We shouldn't be nervous."

Lady Rainicorn then smiled a little.

"감사합니다."
(Thank you.)

Finn rested his head onto Lady's back. He felt so uncomfortable not knowing what's happening in the ER. He tossed and turned, trying to make himself comfortable, but nothing worked.

"Jake will be all right. I know him. Any time now, the nurse will come through the doors saying that he's alright. Keep calm, Finn. Just keep calm."

He wrapped his small towel around himself and shut his eyes tightly.

"I'm not gonna break my promise to mom."



"Hey, you two! Hurry up! C'mon!!"

Jake and Baby Finn came into the house, and he put Finn down on the floor.

"Jeez Jermaine, your so loud! What's the problem?"

"I-I think it's mom. She doesn't look too good."

"Well, duh! We all know that! Is that why you screamed for us to come?"

"No, it's more...serious."

"Serious?!"

Finn looked at Jake and Jermaine in confusion. Jake looked down at Finn and then started whispering to Jermaine.

"What's going on?"

Jermaine started whispering back to Jake.

"Wait, right now?"

Jermaine then nodded. Jake then sighed, picked up Finn, placed him on his back, and walked down the hallways.

"Jake, what's going on?"

"It's fine, Finn. Mom wants to see you."

"Oh, okay."

They both came into a small room. The room had a scent of sweet flowers. There was a small little bed in the middle of the room. Margaret was sleeping on the bed. She was very pale.  Jake walked up next to her and shook her gently.

"Hey Mom. I brought Finn here."

Margaret opened her eyes and slightly smiled.

"Where is he?"

Jake put Finn down on the bed. Margaret placed her hand on Finn's head.

"Hi Finn."

"Hello Mom. Are you alright?"

Margaret coughed softly.

"I'm soon going to be, Finn. I'm soon going to be..."

Jake went to the door and walked out of the room.

"I just wanted to talk to you, Finn."

"About what?"

"Well, Finn, in honesty, I'm not in a very good shape. I afraid I'm....passing on soon."

"Huh?"

"When my time has come that I have to go, I want you to help take care of everything for me. Take care of your two brothers, watch over them, and most importantly, take care of yourself. I know you're still small, and you can't do much, but I know you can do it."

"...."

"Finn, I want you to promise me...promise me that you'll take good care of yourself and your two brothers. When you get older, look out after them, care for them, and whatever is necessary, I need you to keep them safe from any huge danger. Promise me Finn."

Finn looked at Margaret and he took her hand.

"I promise."

Margaret smiled at Finn.

"Thank you, Finn. I knew I could trust you."

Jake and Jermaine came into the room. Margaret looked at Jermaine.

"Jermaine, you may take Finn. I want to talk to Jake now."

Jermaine grabbed Finn, set him on the ground, and started walking out the door, until Finn stopped at the door. He turned to look at Margaret.

"Goodbye Mom."

Margaret waved her hand at Finn weakly.

"Goodbye....Finn."

Finn went down the hallways with Jermaine, leaving Jake and Margaret in the room. He felt small tears in his eyes and quickly wiped them away.

"I won't let you down, Mom. I promise to keep that promise."

"Hey Finn."

"Hmm...."

"Finn!"

"Huh? What?"

"FINN!! Hey Finn! Wake up!"



Finn opened his eyes in a start. Lady was looking at Finn and Princess Bubblegum was right in front of him. She smiled when he got up from Lady's back.

"Oh, good. You're awake! You fell asleep on us. The nurse came in to tell us about Jake."

"Jake? JAKE?? Is he alright?"

"Oh, Finn. He's alright! They revived him!"

"WHAT?! REALLY?!"

"Yes! They told us he's alright now. C'mon, they're waiting for us in the hospital room."

All three of them ran down to the hospital room. They all came in a big room with rows of beds, clean and unused. Dr. Ice Cream and Nurse Poundcake were surrounding one bed.

"Dr. Ice Cream! Is Jake alright?"

"Oh Finn! Yes, he's alright. Come and see."

Finn walked up to the bed and looked. There, sitting on the bed, was Jake, covered with bandages on his head and his arms.

"JAKE!"

Finn ran to the side of the bed and squeezed Jake.

"Ow... Hey buddy. Not so tight."

"You're alive! I'm so happy!"

"Ughhh, I'm glad to see you too."

Lady flew over to Jake's bed.

"제이크!"
(Jake!)

"Whoa, Lady! You're here!"

"물론 난 여기있어! 나는 당신을 걱정했습니다!"
(Of course I'm here! I was worried about you!)

"I'm sorry, Lady."

Princess Bubblegum came over to the bed. She placed her hand on Jake's head.

"Jake. We are all so very grateful that you're alright."

She then went to talk to Dr. Ice Cream. They both went out of the room, alongside with the nurse, leaving Finn and Lady with Jake. Finn, still squeezing Jake, finally let him go.

"Are you alright, buddy? What happened out there?"

"Um...I can't really remember much...it was all a blur. How'd you even find me?"

"The forest trees were on fire after an explosion."

"Explosion?"

"I followed the smoke, which led me to you. You were knocked out on the grass, and one of those monsters was chewing on you."

"Well that explains why my stomach feels sore."

"You shouldn't have gone out alone, Jake. I told you it was a bad idea."

"Well, at least the monsters are dead. Right?"

"..yeah..."

Finn put his backpack on the bed. It was still soggy from the rain. He pulled up a chair and sat right beside Jake. Lady was cuddling on Jake's lap.

"Hey Finn. I'm wondering, what made you want to come out and get me?"

"Well, duh! I was worried about my bro!"

"I know. But I even told you to take care of the candy people when I went out. Didn't I?"

"Well....er....I'm sorry. But I have to protect my bro! No matter what! It's a promise I made to mom."

"Mom?"

"Before she died, I promised her that I would look out for you and Jermaine, and me. I kept that promise to this day. That's why I went out looking for you. Because I cared about you and that promise I made."

"Oh...well, thanks buddy. I owe it to you for saving me out there."

Finn plopped himself on the soft bed. Lady somewhat fell asleep on Jake's lap. He looked out the window. The sky was clearing up from the clouds. So faintly, he could see stars twinkling in the dark violet sky. His mind started wandering off again.


"Jake...I want to speak a few last things to you."

"Hmm?"

Margaret looked like she was starting to fall asleep. She held up her hands to Jake.

"Jake, I want you and Jermaine to take care of the house. Take very good care of it. Also, watch out for any dangers that might come around. And one more thing....I want you to take VERY good care of...Finn...."

"Finn?"

"He's still small. I want you to look after him when he's in trouble. I want you to always be with him when he is in need of some company. And never forget, Jake. Never....let him....do anything....life-threatening..."

"Sure mom....I'll try my best."

"Thank you, Jake. You all made me proud. Thank you....I love you all..."

Jake held her cold hands. She started closing her eyes and going into a peaceful sleep. Jake placed her hands on the bed. He then tucked her with blankets, turned away, and said nothing else while going out the door.


Jake looked at Finn again. He fell asleep on the side of the bed, right next to Jake.

"You didn't think that I would make a promise to mom like you, Finn?"
